Ahithophel advises Absalom to go after David with 12,000 men, while Hushai advises against this. The latter advises Absalom to raise a massive army from all over Israel and go to war personally. Absalom follows Hushai’s advice, and Ahithophel commits suicide. David flees to Mahanaim, where Absalom follows him relentlessly.
