Elimelech, Naomi, and their sons, Mahlon and Chilion, move to Moab due to a famine. The sones marry Oprah and Ruth, who are Moabites. Elimelech and his sons die, and Naomi returns to Bethlehem and tries to persuade Ruth and Oprah to return to their people. She says that she's too old to bear sons for them to marry. Ruth stays with her mother-in-law, saying that "your people shall be my people, and your God, my God."
