After Joshua dies, Judah and Simeon fight against the Canaanites and take Jerusalem. They cut off the thumbs and big toes of the Kings of Bezek. Otniel is rewarded for conquering Kirjath Sepher by marrying Caleb's daughter, Achsah. The Canaanites who could not be destroyed and driven out were paid tribute.
